Ciao, nonno Giovanni. Non ci sono parole. La cosa che più mi fa male è l’inappellabilità dell’evento, l’interruzione del nostro dialogo. Questo, in effetti, più mi terrorizza della morte delle persone a cui voglio bene: il dialogo interrotto, per sempre. Ho imparato da te più che dai libri. Soprattutto l’onestà e l’attaccamento alla propria terra, il radicamento. Tra le infinite, c’è una cosa che voglio oggi ricordare di te: il tuo costante richiamo verso casa. Ovunque fossi, con chiunque fossi, immancabilmente e inesorabilmente arrivava la tua richiesta: “torniamo a Terzo?”. Il valore della terra, della famiglia, della casa. Ti ho ritrovato, recentemente, nelle parole del nonno di “Furore” di Steinbeck: “io non me ne vado. Questa terra non vale niente ma è la mia terra”. Ora te ne sei andato, ma non dalla tua terra. Ricordo quando, da bambino, mi divertivo a chiederti se eri stato nei posti che, a quell’età, mi parevano più esotici e remoti: Napoli, Bolzano, Ancona, Frosinone. Per lavoro li avevi visti tutti, sempre a bordo del camion. Mi chiedo se ora sia la fine del viaggiare o l’inizio di un nuovo viaggio. Mi piacerebbe pensare la seconda. In particolare, mi piace pensare che tu sia uscito per una lunga passeggiata, nelle terre che più amavi. Arrivederci, spero.
